Assessment websites are usually supported by advertising. Some business assessment websites may also allow businesses to spend for enhanced profiles, which do not have an effect on the assessments and ratings. Item assessment websites may be supported by giving associate links to the web sites that offer the examined products.

Because of the specialized marketing drive of this type of web site, the assessments are not objective.

For example, the UK customer advocacy organization, the Customers’ Organization, offers Which?, a website that carries no advertising but covers various services and products, with assessments and ratings usually based upon exhaustive independent screening. Another type of assessment website does not give free-form content assessments, but instead reviews a particular class of items, solutions, or businesses using a collection of pre-defined criteria. One such instance is the Canadian buying website Wishabi, which examines business on 42 criteria [9] and displays the results in a collection of icons. This 2nd type of expert assessment website usuallies give a better system for relative study, but at the expense of minimized flexibility and richness.
